The starkness of this set design was an inspiration for the minimalistic set and props used for Please Note.
Brecht’s theatre inspired the costume, set design and acting style of our play.
David Hare’s The Permanent Way was the core influence for the creation of our performance. It gives accounts from a variety of people involved in the privatisation of the railways and various crashes that ensued.
The first scene of our performance is verbatim theatre (the Joint Stock Method was used which was how The Permanent Way was written) and for the following scenes we improvised and recorded this to create our script.
I looked at various pictures and colour schemes online that I felt would be appropriate for my character: a young surgical nurse called Lucy Smith. I originally wanted to buy the tunic and trousers worn by nurses but was advised to purchase scrubs instead as this is realistic clothing for my characters profession. I have distinguished myself as a nurse and not a surgeon by adding accessories. These include pens attached to my pockets, the use of hand sanitiser and wearing a small watch on my tunic. I also wear trainers which are comfortable and practical for a woman who is constantly on her feet and my hair will be tied back so I look clean and hygienic.
